AQA-MES Graduate Student Mentoring Workshop
Call for Papers
Deadline to Submit—Friday, November 22

Many members of the Association for Queer Anthropology (AQA) and Middle East Section (MES) will not be attending the American Anthropological Association Meetings in Tampa, FL this year. However, in order to continue the important mentoring work that graduate students want and need, we will be holding a co-sponsored Graduate Student Mentoring Workshop focused on publishing.

The objective of this workshop will be to provide insights on how graduate students might work their own writing into the structures, styles of writing, and theoretical and analytical depth required by academic journals today. Toward this end, the workshop will feature papers written by graduate students in MES and AQA and live constructive reviews of those papers by faculty in the respective sections.

We thus call for papers from graduate students in AQA and MES to be used as samples during the workshop. Four papers will be chosen for the faculty presentation of notes, reviews, and revision suggestions. Paper samples can be journal article drafts already in preparation (but that have not yet been submitted to a journal), original research papers that authors would like to turn into journal article manuscripts, or dissertation chapters that authors would also like to turn into journal article manuscripts. Submissions can be anywhere from 6,000-8,000 words (the average range of a journal article) and be about any topic that aims to contribute to an anthropology peer-reviewed journal. Submissions from graduate students at any level will be considered, however papers that include original research will be prioritized. Submissions should include an abstract as well as a list of five keywords.

Submitters should keep in mind that if their paper is chosen it will be directly worked on during the workshop as a sample article manuscript. Workshop participants will respect the intellectual labors of authors by not circulating drafts or appropriating unpublished ideas. While submitters might feel vulnerable in displaying a work-in-progress at a public forum, they will also receive a close constructive review and suggestions toward getting their manuscript published.

Papers chosen for the workshop are not necessarily the “best” papers that the organizers of this workshop will receive. Rather, we will be looking for a range of different kinds of writing in order to provide the best instructive sample from which other students who attend the workshop can learn.

Paper submissions are due by 11:59 pm on Friday, November 22. Please send your submission to Jason Alley (alleyj@beloit.edu).
